In the context of Extreme Painting Galerie PUSH has chosen to examine the meaning of “extreme” itself. Questioning the term, PUSH was inclined to develop a definition of extreme for this exhibition that focused on behaviour; compulsion, masochism, devotion and obsession. Presenting a solo show of esteemed Brooklyn based artist Patrick Lundeen, Galerie PUSH is delighted to host an exhibition where “extreme” interpretations of Patrick Lundeen’s recent works prevail.
Calgary born artist Patrick Lundeen has become known for his large custom shaped canvases. His recent work features cut out eyes and mouths, enhancing their characterisation as objects which attain an almost shamanistic value. Here, pop culture meets ritualistic behaviour; the masks are created through compulsive ritual, their make-up one of repetitive encircling dabs of colour. Lundeen’s latest series Mad Masks will also be on show, these manipulated found pages from Mad Magazines are small objects of worship fashioned from the popular entertainment magazine. Finally Lundeen will present a video work compiled from found footage depicting 1970s piano sensation Liberace in a maniacal state.
