Mathieu LÉVESQUE /
Operating on the borders of representational styles Peripheral Vision brings the margins into focus. Mathieu Lévesque’s imagery is formed through the use of everything from stickers, spray paint and enamel to oil, acrylic and markers. Stylistically shifting between neo-pop, neo surrealism, lowbrow and bad-painting, and working with both the accumulation and dissipation of information, Lévesque identifies these series as two opposing mental states: Headaches and Daydreams. In his use of marginal media Lévesque brings the banal out of the periphery into explosive and brash or soft and vacant arenas, where every touch, gesture, texture and colour is made significant. Here it is the peripheral that leads one into the image rather than out.
Mathieu Lévesque is a Montreal based artist, and a UQÀM graduate in visual arts and art history, his work has been exhibited throughout Québec and the United States. His work can be found in both corporate and private collections. At age 31,
Lévesque is an active member of Montreal’s artistic community as an artist, curator and art instructor.
