Umbra and penumbra refers to the shadows cast by celestial bodies and the different states of darkness experienced during an eclipse. Here Umbra Penumbra serves as the title to a show of photographic works by Jessica Eaton. The reference to shadows, darkness and light reflects the subtle shifts and alterations that are present in Eaton’s work. The concepts of umbra and penumbra most directly referenced in Eaton’s series of eclipses are equally present in her landscapes where colour is skewed by blocking elements of information that make up the images.
Jessica Eaton’s photographic work is pulled from a series of experiments; she compiles data, pieces of information, or codes which are assembled or broken up to reveal the inherent possibilities of image making through photography. Light and the mechanics of the camera are essential to Eaton’s practice. Her work speaks of a balance between scientist and minimalist; she is genuinely fascinated by her medium and through the delicacy of her imagery she allows the viewer to become equally seduced by the possibilities. Eaton’s interest in light, shadow and colour variations are at the forefront of the works assembled in Umbra Penumbra where the addition and subtraction of essential elements to the making of the image provide the basis of Eaton’s photographic recipe.
