Together the work of McLeod and Keating create an interesting paradox. Sentimentality appears easier to access in the mystical spaces of McLeod's painted installations then in the immortalised faces of Keating’s subjects. The portrait; once a traditional method of indicating existence, importance, and individuality becomes less significant by the sheer number of works presented and arbitrary selection of subjects. Much like the mass of images we have access to through social networking websites, where types become more recognizable than individuals, sincerity seems harder to find. Conversely McLeod’s painted installations are more indicative of the individual through the representation of the banal objects that are of value to them, together these works call into question what makes people unique, and how an increase in representation and world wide access may blur or enhance this.
